The north London derby looks to be the Premier League game of choice this weekend as in-form Tottenham travel to their neighbours Arsenal looking to inflict further misery on a club that has possibly kissed goodbye to any hopes of silverware this season.

A joint statement from the third and fourth-placed clubs was issued on Thursday to gently remind fans of the repercussions of the over-zealous abuse expected to be slung on Sunday.

Sunday also sees the League Cup conclude with Liverpool expected to have too much for Championship outfit Cardiff at Wembley. The Reds have met - and beaten - lower-tier opponent four times in a competition’s final before.

Beleaguered Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas seems on the brink of dismissal following defeat against Naples and it is possible that only a win over Bolton will save him from Roman Abramovich's notoriously itchy trigger finger.

Elsewhere, Manchester United face a tricky trip to Norwich – they lost 2-0 on their last visit – whilst Wolves begin life under new boss Terry Connor away to Newcastle.

The league leaders Manchester City will not reintroduce Carlos Tevez to the fans just yet but Blackburn have plenty of reasons to fear their trip to the Etihad even without him.

With that, here are Goal.com's 10 key stats as we look ahead to the weekend's football.

'Steven Gerrard will rise to the occasion at Wembley' - Ronnie Whelan & Lennie Lawrence pick their League Cup final key players

Ronnie Whelan
Simon & Schuster
EXCLUSIVE
By Rob Stewart

Liverpool legend Ronnie Whelan believes League Cup glory could provide prolonged prosperity at Anfield, but former Cardiff City manager Lennie Lawrence has warned the Championship side are capable of a causing major upset.Whelan, who helped Liverpool win a hat-trick of League Cup final victories at Wembley in the early 1980s, believes that skipper Steven Gerrard will be key to the Reds’ hopes of winning a first honour since the FA Cup final in 2006.
It will be Liverpool’s first visit to Wembley in 16 years, when they were beaten in the FA Cup final by Manchester United, and Whelan feels that success on Sunday can bring the good times back to Merseyside.
“I don’t think the job is anywhere close to being finished but they are heading in the direction where they will be a good team again soon and winning a trophy should spur them on to winning a lot more silverware,” Whelan told Goal.com.
“It has been a long time since they won anything but we always classed this as a perfect way of getting into Europe at the earliest opportunity which allows give you a great boost for the run-in towards the end of the season so it is a great incentive for the players.
“Liverpool have taken big strides this season to getting back towards the top of English football under Kenny Dalglish. There was an awful lot of deadwood at the club that has now been cleared away.  If they win this and kick on in the FA Cup and the Premier League they could well be back in the Champions League.”
Lawrence, who is now assistant manager at Crystal Palace, knows that Cardiff will go into the game as underdogs, but having seen the Welsh side overcome his own club on penalties in the semi-finals, he is certain they will give Liverpool a run for their money.
“They might only be in the upper echelons of the Championship but they are no strangers to Wembley and are certainly capable of causing an upset because they won’t be overawed,” Lawrence added. “Their support will be vocal and while Liverpool have to be favourites a shock is not beyond the realms of possibility, especially if Cardiff score first.”
Here Whelan gives Goal.com readers the lowdown on the Liverpool's key personnel, while Lawrence analyses the Cardiff players most likely to ruin the Reds return to Wembley.
Steven Gerrard

“Steven Gerrard really is an unbelievable player. People ask me if he is the best player that Liverpool have ever had and I think that if he played in a team that boasted Kenny Dalglish and Graeme Souness and similar top players he would have been probably classed as Liverpool’s top player.“He has not played in a great team as such so it is difficult to say how good he could have been but in one of those great teams of the 70s or the 80s that Liverpool had, but if he had been playing he could have been the star of any of those teams. He could have got into any Liverpool team and really shone brightly.
“His passing, his shooting and his all-round drive make him a phenomenal player. Had it not been for Steven, Liverpool would not have won the Champions League in 2005 or the FA Cup the year after so he has shown that he is a man for the big occasion and he will be relishing the chance to bring a major honour back to Anfield.
"You can bank on him on the big occasions - for club and country - and that is the sign of a true great."
Luis Suarez

“Say what you want about Luis Suarez but he is one of the best attacking players in the Premier League and I would expect his class to tell on his first visit to Wembley.“His amazing mobility, his intelligence, that adhesive first touch, his turn of speed and his finishing prowess all mean that he will be the most likely match-winner this Sunday.
“Cardiff are bound to try to make life as difficult for him as possible by denying him space and time to turn and motor towards goal but he has the feet to make light of tight-marking in and around the penalty area.
“He will be a constant threat and although Cardiff will try to crowd him out it will be nigh on impossible for them to keep him quiet all the time on the wide open spaces of Wembley.”
Andy Carroll

“The final could be a major stepping-stone for Andy Carroll, who has come in for a bit of stick this season. If he gets the winner at Wembley, if he sets up a crucial goal or even if he just does well in a winning performance then that will give him a huge lift.“Andy is doing an awful lot better now. He is working a whole lot harder and he will be hoping his efforts will be rewarded with a starting slot at Wembley and if he does something special that could really allow him to settle at Anfield.
“Everyone knows that he is a huge threat in the air and he will cause all sorts of problems at set-pieces which, whether you like it or not, are often decisive. He has shown recently that he is a good finisher and he will be hoping to make sure that Luis Suarez is on the ball as much as possible.”
Peter Whittingham

“Peter Whittingham is on the shortlist to be the Championship Player of the Year and for me that is merited because he has really kicked on Cardiff this season and has shown that he is Premier League class.
“They have moved him inside his year since there was a change of management and he has revelled in his central role and he is one of the chief reasons Cardiff will be dangerous.
“Everyone knows that Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez are their top players but they have good players all over the pitch. Obviously Gerrard is the still the main man and I am sure that Malky Mackay will have devised a plan to curtail his influence but Whittingham’s strength is in his attacking play.
“Whittingham has helped himself to nine goals from midfield this season and as well as having the ability to spot a pass he is good in possession and he can be excellent at set-pieces so Liverpool should be aware of his threat at free-kicks."
Mark Hudson

“Mark Hudson has been appointed skipper at Cardiff and that is fitting because he is just the sort of player who really leads by example at the heart of their defence.“He will be really up for the challenge of stopping Andy Carroll but he will also have to make sure that his team stay disciplined and that Luis Suarez is not allowed the freedom of Wembley and he will have to make sure everyone stays on their toes at set-pieces where he needs to take command.
“They have good centre-halves at Cardiff as well as full-backs who can charge up and down and I would imagine they would play a three-man midfield. They are a well-organised unit and they score goals.
“They do not play with out-and-out wingers and when they defend they do so very narrowly so it won’t be easy to break them down or get down the middle. It will be tighter than the majority of people will expect.”
Kenny Miller

"Kenny Miller’s pedigree speaks for itself. His movement is very good. He is a clever player and he has excellent ability to finish chances so the two centre-halves will know that they have to keep tabs on him."I would guess that he will lead the line on his own so Cardiff do not allow Liverpool too much space in midfield but he won't mind that.
"Kenny is a proven goal-getter but he is the sort of player who will work his socks off for the team and use his know-how to create space for himself on counter-attacks and he has the knack of being in the right place at the right time at set-plays.
"Robert Earnshaw has not figured too much because of injury this season but he is always likely to grab a goal, especially if he is coming off the bench. His goal-scoring record is fantastic but he could change the course of the game if Kenny runs out of steam or they need an equaliser late on."

Prandelli: AC Milan versus Juventus not decisive in title race

Italy coach Cesare Prandelli has voiced his opinion that this weekend's Serie A clash between AC Milan and Juventus will not be decisive in the title race.
Massimiliano Allegri's men currently hold a one-point lead over the Old Lady, who have one game in hand, and could move further clear of their biggest rivals for the Scudetto on Saturday.

However, Prandelli has stressed that there is still a long way to go in the campaign, and expects the title race to remain exciting right until the end regardless of the outcome in San Siro.

"In my opinion, it is too early to talk about a decisive match. The season is still long and these two teams will be fighting for the title right until the end," Prandelli stated to Eurosport.

"Both Milan and Juventus have been very consistent this term, and have a well-defined identity. I expect a balanced game. This year's Serie A is very fascinating."

Pepe Reina: Failure is not an option for Liverpool in League Cup final

EXCLUSIVE
By Francisco Delgado

Pepe Reina has insisted that failure is not an option ahead of Sunday's League Cup final against Cardiff City as Liverpool attempt to win their first trophy since 2006.

The Spanish goalkeeper saved three out of four penalties at the Millennium Stadium in the FA Cup win over West Ham six years ago and is looking forward to his first Wembley appearance with the club.

He told Goal.com: "When you are in a final they have to be won and that is our mission at Wembley on Sunday.

"Six years without a title is too long for a club like Liverpool. We cannot fail to win this final.

"I came to Liverpool dreaming of moments like this: to be able to play in finals and winning titles. I've lived positive experiences already and want to repeat that this Sunday.

"There will be people who do not give too much importance to the Carling Cup but it is an official major tournament and you do not always have chances of reaching the final; therefore, we want to seize the moment.

"We are the favourites against Cardiff because of the fact we play in different leagues. This is true, but in one match, we know anything can happen."

Reina may be right to show caution, as the Bluebirds have won nine of their 12 meetings with Liverpool in all competitions.

“We must leave the field having put in the same effort as if we had just faced Manchester United," he added.

"Playing in a stadium such as Wembley is a pleasure. The last time I played there was with Spain and I lost against England. Now I have a good opportunity to enjoy winning a title there, although I repeat - it will not be easy."

The 29-year-old has been at the heart of the Liverpool revival under Kenny Dalglish – a key part of a defence that is bettered only by Manchester City in the Premier League.

"In recent weeks, Liverpool has improved our game, even though we lost at Old Trafford," said the goalkeeper.

"We arrive with confidence to this final and we know that if we win, our morale will be great for the rest of the season.

"These days I have just seen very concentrated players and at a very high level of training. It is normal. All we want is to play this game and we will make it difficult for our head coach making the choice of players for playing."

Reina believes victory on Sunday would be special, in particular, for Dalglish as fans reap the initial rewards of the legendary Scot’s project at the club.

"Kenny Dalglish is excited about the possibility to lift the Cup. For him the match is also special because he took the team while it was going through some tough times and step by step we are taking the type of successful roads that really belong to this club.

“The coach is a key figure in the recovery of the team.

"The people are very identified with us. With these fans, we can go anywhere and we want to dedicate the title to them on Sunday if things go well

"About our rivals Cardiff, we have good references. We know they are a strong team that does not give up, with players who have played Premier League and who works very well at set-pieces. We must be very careful about this.

"What will be the key to the game? We must keep our concentration from the first minute and go ahead early on. Once we are ahead on the scoreboard, we can manage the pace of the game from then on."

Liverpool have a successful tradition against lower-tier sides in the League Cup final. They beat Bolton Wanderers 2-1 in 1995 and Birmingham City on penalties to win the 2001 tournament.

AC Milan's Mario Yepes: Juventus are not dependent on Andrea Pirlo

EXCLUSIVE
By Fabrizio Ponciroli

AC Milan defender Mario Yepes is eagerly anticipating Saturday evening's Serie A match at home against Juventus.
All eyes will be on Juventus playmaker Andrea Pirlo at San Siro as the midfielder returns to the club where he achieved great success, but Yepes has warned that there is more to the Old Lady than just the 32-year-old.

"Juventus are not reliant on just one player. They are a very strong collective, and every player is important for them," Yepes said to Goal.com.

"They have an immense desire to win and to return to the top. They are high on confidence and are still unbeaten. That boosts their morale even further and makes them more determined to win."

AC Milan currently sit top of the table with a one-point lead over their Turin based rivals, and are keen to extend the gap by bagging all three points. Nevertheless, Yepes has stressed that Saturday's encounter will not be decisive in deciding this season's champions.

He said: "The match versus Juventus wont be decisive for the Scudetto. There are still many games to be played and points to be earned. A win would obviously be a big boost though, and we hope to record a victory."

Aston Villa manager Alex McLeish hints at move for LA Galaxy striker Robbie Keane in the summer

Aston Villa manager Alex McLeish has hinted that he could make a permanent move forRobbie Keane in the summer.

Keane will return to LA Galaxy after making his final appearance for Villa at Wigan on Saturday.

The former Tottenham striker has impressed on his return to the Premier League, with three goals in six games, and McLeish believes there is a chance of a deal in the summer.
“Who knows? We just need to wait and see what happens between now and then,” the 53-year-old told Sky Sports.

"Robbie's been a breath of fresh air. He's a good leader, he's a talker, and he's a very good footballer.

“It's been great to have him around and, hopefully, some of his influences have rubbed off on some of the younger players.

"Maybe we've forged a relationship now, and I hope Robbie thinks of us first if he's going to do this again next season."

McLeish’s side are on a run of four Premier League games without a win but face three sides in the bottom half in their next three games.
Next up is Roberto Martinez’s side, and the former Rangers manager has warned his players that Wigan will go into the game on Saturday expecting a result.

"They'll be thinking the same thing," he said. "Wigan had a very good result away at Bolton, so they'll be buoyed by that. With their home advantage, they'll feel that if they can get two victories in a row, it can set them up.

"But we've got our own ideas about that, and we would like to target a maximum nine points in the next three games.”
